Daddy Issues: Gun Control

The third year of the 2016 presidential election cycle is finally upon us. Until election day, I will post the official statements and quotes on different issues that may concern parents from the current candidates.

The next issue that we will investigate is Gun Control.

2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

What they say about it:

Hillary Clinton (DEM)
"I respect the Second Amendment. I respect the rights of lawful gun owners to own guns, to use their guns, but I also believe that most lawful gun owners whom I have spoken with for many years across our country also want to be sure that we keep those guns out of the wrong hands."

Donald Trump (GOP)
Supports a ban on assault weapons and longer waiting periods on gun purchases.

Bernie Sanders (DEM)
"This is what I do believe. I come from a state that has virtually no gun control. And yet, at political peril, I voted for an instant background check, which I want to see strengthened and expanded. I voted to ban certain types of assault weapons, which are designed only to kill people. I voted to end the so-called gun show loophole. What I think there needs to be is a dialogue."

Ted Cruz (GOP)
"It is a Constitutional right to protect your children, your family, your home, our lives, and to serve as the ultimate check against governmental tyranny — for the protection of liberty."

Marco Rubio (GOP)
"My position on guns is pretty clear. I believe law-abiding people have a fundamental constitutional right to bear arms. And I believe criminals and dangerous people should not have access to guns. There are laws that protect those two things--but many of these [additional] gun laws are ineffective. They don't do those things. They either infringe on the rights of law-abiding people and do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. And I'm troubled this debate is about guns. It should be about violence. Violence is the problem, guns are what they're using. We are missing a golden opportunity to have an open, honest and serious conversation about these horrific violent acts, because everyone's focused on passing these laws that have proven ineffective."

Ben Carson (GOP)
"It depends on where you live. If you live in the midst of a lot of people, and I’m afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it.”

Martin O'Malley (DEM)
"The most poisonous force in American politics today is not the bad people who do bad things, it is the good people who do nothing. . . . If the thousands of young men killed by gun violence every year across America were young, poor and white rather than young, poor and black, it is hard to imagine that our Congress would continue to block common-sense measures to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill."

Jeb Bush (GOP)
He signed into law the Florida no-retreat bill, which says that a person need not retreat from an attack, may "stand his ground" and use deadly force if he reasonably believes he or another person is threatened by death or serious physical injury

Rand Paul (GOP)
"There's a sickness in our country. There's something terribly wrong. But it isn't going to be fixed by your government. It's people straying away, it's people not understanding where salvation comes from. I think if we understand that, we'll have better expectations of what to expect from government."

Carly Fiorina (GOP)
A strong supporter of second-amendment gun rights and that she opposed the 1994 bill which banned a large group of semi-automatic or assault weapons. In the 2010 U.S. Senate race, Fiorina said the No-Fly list is broad and some people on it should be allowed to own a gun.

Mike Huckabee (GOP)
“My position on the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution is as clear for me as the position held by most journalists toward the 1st Amendment... [I'm] a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment right of Americans to own firearms for self-protection and as a matter of principle.”

Rick Santorum (GOP)
While the president did propose some reasonable measures, I'm disappointed, yet not surprised, to see so much emphasis on gun control and not enough on key contributors to mass shootings — mental illness and the impact of the entertainment industry's glorification of violence,"
